Why do I need to treat a root canal?

The tooth, like any other living tissue of our body, needs nutrition. This nutrition is provided by the dental pulp, popularly known as "nerve". The pulp is a body composed of blood vessels, connective tissue and nervous tissue. When attacked by cavities, periodontal disease, extensive restorations or trauma, the pulp responds with inflammation, which unlike other parts of the body, is irreversible and must be removed. This removal followed by filling of the space formerly occupied by the pulp with an inert, biologically compatible material, is called Endodontic Treatment or root canal treatment. In other cases, the pulp is necrotic (with no vitality) and infected by bacteria. This "focus of infection" affect the overall health and should be banned, by treating the root canal. If it is not treated in time, the tooth is lost, causing a great imbalance in oral health.
